The Ruhrtriennale is an annual music and arts festival in the Ruhr area of Germany. The locations of the Ruhrtriennale are generally industrial heritage sites like the Jahrhunderthalle in Bochum, the Zeche Zollverein or the Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord.
Jahrhunderthalle in Bochum
The Jahrhunderthalle is a venue for such famous events like the Ruhrtriennale. Interesting detail: The hall was constructed on top of an existing plant. After that, the soil was risen up to the level of the hall. So the first plant became part of the basement.
Ruhr Museum in Essen
The Ruhr Museum is placed in the former coal preparation plant at the Zeche Zollverein. On several floors, it tells not only the story of the Zeche (coal mine) but also shows the history of the Ruhr area (Ruhrgebiet).
Big Air Package by Christo in Oberhausen
Every year another interesting art project takes place at the Gasometer (a former gas holder) in Oberhausen. In 2013 I visited the ‘Big Air Package’ created by Christo. This time the artist, who is generally known for wrapping huge things, produced a kind of balloon filling the inside of the gas holder.
Torpedo car in Duisburg
On my night stroll through the Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord, an industrial heritage park in Ruhr area, I came across this torpedo car. These cars are used for hauling molten pig iron from the blast furnace to the next processing unit.
Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord
The Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord is actually the area of a former iron works. It is open for public and people are allowed to walk on the grounds of the iron works all the day long. Even at night!
Restaurant Hauptschalthaus in Duisburg
The restaurant Hauptschalthaus is located in the former control centre of an ironworks in Duisburg. The main attraction of the restaurant is the dining area in front of some huge insulators. Through the big windows, one also has a good view of the ironworks situated at the Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord.

This sculpture created by the German carver Max Kratz is located next to the central station of Essen. It is named ‘Steile Lagerung’ and reminds of the hard work miners did in the region.
