Unfortunately it was pretty rainy during my visit in Bonn. I got a nice photo of the town hall though. Many years ago I watched a ‘Rathaussturm’ here. Have you already heard about this carnival tradition? At the end of the carnival period the carnival revellers supported by a female guard ‘take over the power’ at the town hall for a few days.
Donkey path in Dürnstein
There are several paths up to Dürnstein Castle from the centre of the city. I took a more difficult one named donkey path.
Dürnstein Abbey in Dürnstein
After reaching the walls of Dürnstein Castle (Burgruine Dürnstein), I had this view of Dürnstein Abbey (Stift Dürnstein). I guess some of you have already seen this church steeple while taking a river cruise ship?
Info boards at Dürnstein Castle
After climbing a steep trail up to Dürnstein Castle I came across a couple of information boards that told me some details about the life of Richard I of England also known as King Lionheart.
Napoleonic war memorial in Loiben
Riding the Wachau Railway I always wondered about the meaning of this big memorial just next to the tracks. After a visit at the Domäne Wachau I had the chance to learn more about it: It is a memorial about an engagement between French, Austrian and Russian troops during the Napoleonic Wars on Nov 11th, 1805.
Domäne Wachau in Dürnstein
At the Domäne Wachau I learned about a wine which was served for a very important moment in Austrian history. The wine label Katzensprung was proffered at that banquet celebrated after signing the Austrian Independent Treaty in the year 1955.

A view of the Holy Trinity column (German: Dreifaltigkeitssäule) at the central square of Retz. The column was built in the years 1743 – 1745. In the background one can see the Verderber – Haus.
Pillory at the main square of Retz
A pillory (German: Pranger) built in 1561. I was surprised to read that this pillory had been destroyed in 18th century but people of Retz were able to reconstruct the pillory in 1962 after finding the most parts in different places nearby.
Scraffito Haus in Retz
The Scraffito – Haus named after a Scraffito covering two sides of the building reminded me a little of a big comic strip but with a serious topic. Which building covered with fascinating Scraffito do you know?
Town hall of Retz
The very special town hall of Retz: Originally built as a church it turned into the office of the mayor after some war destruction. The most interesting detail is beneath the town hall: A huge wine cellar system named Retzer Erlebniskeller!
Relief at the Verderber – Haus in Retz
Relief with the coat of arms of Hannes Firenncz whose family came from Gorizia. I saw this relief at the walls of the Verderber – Haus. Which amazing reliefs do you know?
Verderber – Haus in Retz
One of the highlights at the market place of Retz: The Verderber – Haus. The architecture is very special. Do you see that the building offers two different types of crenellations? Another interesting detail is a colorful relief above the gate.
