The Maßenburg is a castle ruin on a hill high over Leoben. It was probably first built in the 13th century. Today hikers have there a great view of Leoben from a viewing tower built on the ruins of a former watch tower.

The church was named after Jodok (Saint Judoc) who had lived in 7th century. The church was first mentioned in 14th century. An interesting architectural detail: The church is protected against avalanches by a chapel in front of its main entrance.

At the air show Airpower in Zeltweg, I took this photo of a North American B-25J Mitchell. This plane was built in 1945. Today one can see it at the Hangar-7 in Salzburg or while performances of ‘The Flying Bulls’.

Beuschel for lunch in Austria
After walking through the gorge of the Mendlingtal I ordered at the Hammerherrenhaus a “Beuschel” for lunch. This is a traditional meal especially in Vienna, but one gets it in other parts of Austria too. Generally it includes the lungs and the heart of a calf served with a bread dumpling. There are variations with other plucks too.
Hiking along the Mendlingtal
The trail along the Mendlingtal is a path of about 3 kilometres. It leads from a theme park about logging up to a former Hammerherrenhaus (Home of the owner of a hammer mill). The scenery is changing several times. Sometimes one walk along a tame creek, sometimes one walk along footbridges high over a stream in full spate.
Log driving at Mendlingtal
At the theme park Mendlingtal Valley there is a chance to watch log drivers at work. At the photo above some workers are trying to put the logs through the last weir before the logs will arrive the timber mill.
